08-24-2004: 10 Weeks: Don't Get Mad, Get Even!


MoveOn PAC will wage a star-studded campaign to support Democratic U.S. presidential candidate John Kerry, the organization announced Wednesday.

The liberal political group said it will kick off the campaign with a sold-out gala in New York on Aug. 24 called 10 Weeks: Don't Get Mad, Get Even!

The campaign -- scheduled to run through Election Day -- will feature TV ads created by such filmmakers as Rob Reiner, Darren Aronofsky and Allison Anders, with appearances by Hollywood stars including Matt Damon, Scarlett Johanssen, Kevin Bacon and Rebecca Romijn.

MoveOn PAC said it would announce a new initiative each week intended to support Kerry's campaign. The first will be promoted by an ad called Register and Vote, written and directed by Benny Boom -- who has directed music videos for P.Diddy, Nelly and Kelly Rowland, and commercials for Reebok and Footlocker.

Other commercials lined up for the campaign include: The Mistake, directed by Reiner; Tommy, written and directed by Linklater; Cheney Is Not on Our Side, written and directed by Harrelson; American Opinions, written and directed by John Sayles, and featuring the voice of Martin Sheen.

Model Rebecca Romijn stars in the sizzling "Stranded Republicans" spot. She picks up a guy whose car has broken down on the side of the road. "You a Republican?" she asks, before letting him in. "It must be hard not having a candidate for President." "What do you mean?" he asks. "Well, Republicans would never create the largest deficit on history," she replies, rattling off a list of unconservative failures of the right-wing Administration. Before dropping him off, Romijn extends an olive branch. "Don't worry, you're not alone," she says, offering a different sticker: Another Republican Voting for Kerry. "You got another?" he asks. Stranded Republicans is written by Larry Kopald and John Buffalo Mailer, starring Rebecca Romijn and directed by Marty Callner.

Marty Callner: "I decided to make Stranded Republican in the hope that I might be able to sway undecided voters in the swing states. The ad points out that Bush is neither a Republican or a Democrat, and that this administration is in fact un-American in their policies. In today's climate of character assassination advertising, I felt it would be effective to try an approach using honey instead of vinegar. Growing up in the Midwest I understand that the people are real and need to be reasoned with, rather than being made to feel abject fear. Everyone must realize that this is the most important election of any of our lifetimes, and I pray that the efforts of all of these talented musicians and filmmakers can actually make a difference".
